Identifying and meeting the needs of struggling students
Aideen Wall
Identification: A teacher becomes concerned that a student is having difficulty understanding and keeping up with coursework and identifies this student as a possible struggling student.
What exactly are the signs that a student may be struggling?
Lack of eye contact, eyes frequently cast downwards, looking at the floor
Obvious discomfort when called upon to answer questions, fidgeting, moving about in his/her chair
Visible frustration when he/she is unable to complete a task
Gives up easily
Withdrawal, lack of engagement in the class, rarely asks the teacher any questions
Misbehaves; may be conflictive
Frequently fails to hand in homework or assignments
Inadequate test results
The teacher conducts an interview with the student to talk about any difficulties he/she may be experiencing inside or outside of the class.
Having spoken to both the student and his/her parents the teacher sets specific and attainable learning goals for the student based on the information attained and intervenes with classroom strategies designed to help the student achieve those goals
The teacher evaluates the student to determine his/her learning style and incorporates activities that complement this learning style.
The student is given extra attention and support along with positive reinforcement.
The student responds well to the intervention and shows signs of improvement. No further intervention is required.
The teacher observes and keeps a record of student participation, behavior and performance
If over a period of time, the student shows no sign of improvement, he/she is then referred to an education specialist for screening
The results of the screening tests suggest that there is no need for a specialist education program. The student will continue with the regular curriculum and will continue to be monitored on a regular basis.
The results of the screening tests reveal a learning disability and an individualized education plan (IEP) is laid out with the agreement of the student and his/her parents and implemented by the teacher and support teachers
The effectiveness of the IEP is regularly assessed and student's progress or lack of progress is regularly reported to parents
The IEP is successful and the student makes progress.
The IEP is not effective. In this case, the students may decide to remove him/her from the school in order to explore other possibilities
Parents are notified and asked whether or not they are aware of any any issues at home or otherwise that may be affecting his/her school work.
