Kindred follows Dana as she time travels back in time to slavery. Although how this is done is not explained, it still counts as she travels several times and there is a general idea of why she goes back in time which is based on her relationship with a young white boy. Dana describes her first 'shift' into the past by stating, "Then, just before he would have touched me, he vanished. The house, the books, everything vanished. Suddenly, I was outdoors kneeling on the ground beneath trees"(Butler,13). She explains how everything around her seemed to disappear within a flash, for some reason her surroundings change.
