- Voyager means traveler
- Voyagers were men from France
- They traveled between the fur merchants in Montreal and the posts of Great Lakes
Merchants
- Merchants worked as blacksmiths, bakers, butchers, masons, and shoemakers
- They also sold furs to the FN
- For extra income, merchants sold Coureur de Bois furs as well.
- Coureur de Bois means runner of the woods
- This term comes from these people trying to find FN to trade with
- When independent trading became illegal, they stole and secretly traded with FN
Farmers
Habitants
- Habitants lived on seigneurs
- These people farmed seigneurs
- habitants means inhabitants which means people who in habit the land
Seigneurs
- This was the land that Habitants lived on
- Seigneurs were large plots of land owned by land lords
- Landlords had to recruit farmers or settlers to live on this land
Soldiers
- Came to New France to defend them from the First Nations
- They were offered seigneuries to come and live in New France
- Chose the military career to make a living
