Pre-assessment and differentiation
2nd Grade Math
Chinese Immersion Program
Unit: Measurement
Pre-assessments
Pre-assessment 1
We will use “feet” and “inches” which are much more familiar as units to the students in the United States, and let them circle the appropriate unit for the objects.
Pre-assessment 2
Students are encouraged to find different kinds of things in the classroom to practice estimation and measurement. For example, a table, a chair, a notebook, a pencil.
Grouping by the results of pre-assessments
Trunk Group: 12 students have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score but need to develop higher-order thinking skills. These students have some idea of the difference between feet and inches but are not always able to relate them correctly to the corresponding objects. They also had a rudimentary knowledge of how to use a ruler.
Root Group: 5 students appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels, and 2 students have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs. These students did not perform well in the two pre-assessments due to language or other limitations. They did not get the requirements very well or had a very limited understanding of length units, estimation, and measurement concepts.
Crown Group: 5 students answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly. They are familiar with the concept of feet and inches and can distinguish them accurately. Their estimates of length are within a reasonable margin of error. They also have an initial understanding of how to properly use a ruler to measure the length of an object.
Differentiation strategy
Trunk Group
The teacher uses Chinese as much as possible but can speak English as an aid to explain new concepts when they are introduced. Students are encouraged to communicate in Chinese only. Occasional use of English words was allowed, the teacher will promptly tell them the Chinese version of the word.
Students will grasp the general concepts of centimeters and decimeters with the help of the teacher, and prepare for measurement by selecting the appropriate length unit for some familiar objects.
They are using things that are common in the classroom and with a suitable length of the ruler or tape measure, to practice their estimation and measurement skills.
Root Group
Some of the students in this group have language difficulties, so the teacher can use bilingualism here, as long as it helps them to understand the instruction and the requirements.
When teaching the units of length used in China, students are not forced to know the difference between them and feet and inches. However, they are required to learn to use the ruler and make readings correctly.
Students will watch this fun video with the teacher, to get a better understanding of the estimation and measurement:

Crown Group
Students are asked to find approximate conversions between feet and centimeters, and between inches and decimeters on a double-sided tape measure.
They are going to learn to measure things longer than a ruler and a tape measure, such as the height of a person, or the length of the classroom. This will further develop their estimation and measurement skills, as well as their proficiency in addition and subtraction.
The teacher uses Chinese only throughout the teaching in this group and asks students to communicate with each other and answer questions in complete Chinese sentences.
