3.4 Connectivity Methods
A MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) serves a large geographical area, around the size of a city.
Voice communication, also known as VoIP, allows speech to be converted into digital data and sent over the Internet.
WANs (Wide Area Networks) have an extremely wide range, spanning from house to house, city to city, and country and country. ADSLs and leased lines are two examples of WANs.
Satellite communication involves the use of satellites in orbit to provide communication links between places on Earth, usually more remote areas.
A LAN (Local Area Network) connects computers together within an area the size of a house, school or university campus.
A half-duplex system provides communication in both directions, but not at the same time - only one device can communicate at a time, and the other has to wait their turn.
A duplex communication system consists of two or more connected devices that can communicate with each other in all directions, all the time.
Simplex communication sends information in one direction only, for the other device to receive.
3.1 Servers
A database server runs a network database application and maintains database files. It stores, analyses and manipulates data.
A web server handles the delivery of web pages, and the files linked to those web pages. It uses HTTP to deliver webpage content.
An application server is specifically designed to host applications. It includes both the hardware and software that provide an environment for programs to run.
A mail server handles and delivers e-mails over a network, usually over the Internet.
A print server is dedicated to handling and managing printing operations. The print server performs the task for you, freeing up the user and computer to do other things.
A hypervisor is computer software, firmware or hardware that creates and runs virtual machines. A computer that runs the hypervisor is called a host machine, and each virtual machine is called a guest machine.

3.2 Virtualisation
Storage virtualisation is the merging of physical storage from multiple storage devices into what appears to be a single storage device, managed from a central console.
Cloud storage is a type of storage where digital data is stored in physical servers, typically owned and managed by a hosting company. This data is accessible on any device, as long as you log into your account.
Client virtualisation is a virtual machine environment in the user’s machine, where the user’s computer hosts multiple VMs.
Hybrid cloud storage is an approach that combines the cloud and physical storage, in order to improve efficiency.
Server virtualisation is the process of dividing a physical server into multiple unique, isolated virtual servers through software applications. Each virtual server can run its own OSs independently.
3.5 Business Systems
Standard operating procedures (shortened to SOP) are a set of step-by-step instructions created by an organisation to help workers carry out routine operations.
Helpdesk software enables workers to keep track of user requests and deal with other customer-related issues.
CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management. This system helps manage a company’s relationships and interactions with customers, driving sales growth.
An MIS (Management Information System) is an information system used for decision-making, and for the coordination, control, analysis and visualisation of information in an organisation.
