3.2 Virtualisation
What visualization is
The refers to creating a virtual version of something, including virtual computer hardware platforms, storage devices, and computer network resources.
Virtualization creates a simulated, or virtual computing environment as opposed to a physical environment
Server virtualization
Server virtualization is the process of dividing a physical server into multiple unique and isolated virtual servers by means of a software application. Each virtual server can run its own operating systems independently.
-
Storage visualisation
Storage virtualization is the pooling of physical storage from multiple storage devices into what appears to be a single storage device or pool of available storage capacity that is managed from a central console.
-
Cloud storage
Cloud storage is when everything is saved onto a server where you can access from all over the world.
Hybrid cloud storage
Hybrid cloud storage is an approach to managing cloud storage that uses both local and off-site resources. The hybrid cloud storage infrastructure is often used to supplement internal data storage with public cloud storage.
Mixture of private cloud, public cloud and locally owned services
3.1 Types of Server
File server
A file server is a central server in a computer network that provides file systems or at least parts of a file system to connected clients. File servers therefore offer users a central storage place for files on internal data media, which is accessible to all authorised clients.
Print server
A print server manages print requests and makes printer queue status information available to end users and network administrators.
Mail server
a server that handles and delivers email over a network, usually over the Internet. A mail server can receive emails from client computers and deliver them to other mail servers.
Web server
A computer dedicated to serving web pages. A Web Server software application running on the same computer. For example Apache is a very popular web server application.
3.4 Connectivity methods
LAN
A local area network is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building.
MAN
Stands for Metropolitan Area Network. A MAN is a network that spans a large area, such as a town or city. It is larger than a campus area network, but smaller than a wide area network.
WAN
A wide area network is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area for the primary purpose of computer networking. Wide area networks are often established with leased telecommunication circuits.
Voice communications
Voice communication networks have traditionally been designed to provide either analog signal paths or fixed-rate synchronous digital connections between individual subscribers.
