LO3 Understand Business IT Systems
3.1 Types Of Servers
Server - Powerful computer or device which
serves a need for a network
File Server - Central storage location for files
+Log on any computer and have access
+Sever is locked in a room so data is secure
-Server fails all data is lost until backup
Print Server - Connects printers to client computers on a network
+Multiple people same printer
+Maximum use of printer
-Overload with print requests
Application Server - client use of computer applications without needing logical installations
+Security updates done easily
+Easy to install (one place)
-Increased network bandwidth as people run over network
Database Server - uses a database application that provides database services to other computer + Multiple people working on same database
Web server - uses http to deliver webpage conent
+can deal with high number of requests
can backup content easily
-servers can crash and data could be lost
3.2 Virtualisation
Virtualisation creates a stimulated virtual environment
Storage Virtualisation - the merging of physical storage devices from multiple storage devices
+Reduces hardware costs
-can make upgrades more challenging
Server virtualisation - dividing a physical server into multiple unique isolated servers
+saves money on IT cost
-New management costs
Client virtualisation - Runs different operating systems on the same client network
+Can access desktop from anywhere
-Limit number of operating systems
Cloud storage - saves data and information somewhere external on the internet
+saves money on IT costs
-can be lost easily
3.3 Network Characteristics
Peer to Peer - computers are linked to each other they send data packets to each other on a dedicated server
+does not need a network os as ther is no server
+one pc fails wont affects the network
-cannot perform central backup of files
Client server - Files stored on a dedicated client server
+all files stored centrally
+still available if pc's breakdown
-servers are expensive
-requires a network os
Network Topologies-
Bus-All devices are connected by a bus network
+easy to install
+cheap to get
-main cable faliure = network failure
3.4 connectivity methods
WAN - A wide area network is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area and connects computers and local area networks
+They enable data to be shared between them
-There could be network failure as something could go wrong
LAN - A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school , laboratory or office building
+Shared Resources
-Expensive to set up
MAN - small version of WAN which covers a town or city
MAN - small version of WAN which covers a town or city
Voice Communication - Cellular phones transmit using land based towers
Satellite communication - Devices that use satellites that stay in geo-stationary orbits around Earth which communicate directly with signals from earth
Duplex - bi-directional communication where both ends can send signals to each other
Half Duplex - single directional communication where one end can send signals to each other for example a walkie talkie
Simplex communication - Simplex communication is a communication channel that sends information in one direction only.
3.5 Business system
MIS - Used to collect, store, analyse and present data to an organisation , allows to process large amounts of data and analyse it. Information needs to be summarised and graphed and trends may need to be noted.
CRM - This system is used to improve the relationship between organisation and its customers.Creates a better strategy for managing a company's relationships , an example would be a marketing team tracking promotions that customers may like.
Help Desk - Used to provide real time support to a user from a trained member of staff. Can help people with a problem for example instructions can be given
SOP - A comprehensive step by step guide on how to carry out a business routine
