Process for identifying and referring struggling students
Does the student have difficulty communicating and interacting with peers?
Yes, student seems to have difficulties beyond typical for peers in pervasiveness/duration/severity
Do the difficulties manifest in student being unable to control behavior?
Discuss with student's homeroom teacher
Based on outcome of discussion, refer student to special education or school psychological services
Yes, but within normal range experienced by peers
If teacher-student relationship sufficiently good, meet with student one-on-one to see if student is willing to talk.
Does the student exhibit compulsive behaviors?
behaviors may be a danger to self or others
Ensure student is safe, immediately contact administration
Behaviors are concerning but not dangerous (ex: excessive hand-washing)
Based on outcome of discussion, refer student to school psychological services
Does the student have academic difficulties?
Yes, within the normal scope experienced by students.
Meet with student one-on-one to discuss student goals and a study plan
Yes, beyond the scope normally experienced by students in pervasiveness/duration/severity
Based on outcome of discussion, make accommodations for student's specific disability
Does student
exhibit negative affect that exceeds that of peers in pervasiveness/duration/severity?
Yes, and harm to self or others may be imminent
