Pure and Impure Substances
Pure Substances
Elements and compounds are the two types of pure substances
Mixtures
Solvents
A liquid in which the solute dissolves to form a solution.
Types of solvents: White Spirit, Propanone, Ethanol, Water
Solute
The dissolved substance in a solution.
Types of solutes: Sugar, Salt, Silver Nitrate
Separation techniques
Filtration
Filtration is a method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Distillation
Simple
To separate a liquid and soluble solid from a solution (e.g. water from a solution of salt water)
Fractional
A method for separating a liquid from a mixture of two or more liquids
Evaporation
The process by which an element or compound transitions from its liquid state to its gaseous state below the temperature at which it boils
Chromatography
Paper chromatography is a method for separating dissolved substances from one another. It is often used when the dissolved substances are coloured, such as inks, food colorings and plant dyes
Crystallization
Type of mixtures
Colloid
