Fur Traders
Coureur de Bois
Coureur de Bois means " runner of the woods". They worked by themselves independently. They influenced making independent trading legal.
Voyageurs
The voyageurs were men from New France. They travelled between the fur merchants of Montreal and further west.
Merchants
Usually they are bakers, blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, butchers. The merchants made their living of the fur trade. They also imported goods to many different First Nations groups.
The Sovereign Council
Governor
The Governor controlled the military and looked after the colony defence. They also dealt with the fur trade with First Nations, which wer considered external relationships.
Intendant
They worked to keep the colony in order. He also looked for ways to exploit the colony in the benefit of France. They also made France less dependant when meeting basic needs
Bishop of Quebec
The Bishop Of Quebec represented the Catholic Church. They also played an active role in governing the colony. Even after France became a British Colony in 1763 the influence of the church remained strong.
Farmers
Habitants
Habitants were Farmers who lived on Seigneurs. Habitants had Land lords called seigneurs The habitants had to build a house, clear the fields and plant the crops so that they could establish a farm.
Seigneurs
Seigneurs owner plots of land called Seigneuries. Seigneurs were like Landlords. They recruited settlers to work and keep the land grant, these workers were called habitants.
Soldiers
Many soldiers came to New France to fight and defend the colony from the British and the Haudenosaunee. Many of the soldiers only came into the military as a way to make a living
