History and background
Today cheerleaders are predominantly female but, believe it or not, women weren't allowed to join cheerleading teams until 1923.
In 1948 Lawrence Herkimer founded the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) which began to hold cheer workshops. The first one was held that year, with more than 50 attendees.
Cheerleading eventually began in 1898 when a cheerleader by the name of Johnny Campbell got so excited that he jumped out in front of the crowd.
