Belief
Order: An unseen order, or the Holy Spirit
- This idea of the soul of ...
- There's the Father - God, the Son - Jesus,
and the Holy Spirit as this in-between substance
that exists within and among everyone
- Force that compels and helps guide people
God-Man:
A lot of controversy and different thoughts:
=> Man? God? Part-man, part-god? Fully-man fully-god?
-
Trinity: 3 part understanding of this higher being:
- God as a triality of Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
Father as in the divine aspect, Son for the humanity
and Holy Spirit for this spiritual power
- Analogy: states of water, and how they are all true of
the same being
Incarnation: Godliness within a human body, i.e. Jesus as fully God and fully man
Theology
Mystical Body of Christ:
- The concept that we all exist within the same
body, and that the Holy spirit flows through all of us
- Jesus/God is the body, and we are the cells
- A metaphor or image of community
- Exists within any group of 2 or 3
The Mind of the Church:
Incarnation: The idea that Jesus was both fully God, and fully man
- but focusing more on Jesus' humanity --> that he was one of us
- Willing to suffer for the sake of humanity
Atonement:
- The idea of original sin, and how Jesus died
for the salvation of mankind from this sin
- The general idea that God, or Jesus is willing
to suffer for humanity, these intimacy/connection
with people
Trinity: Father, Son, Holy spirit triality
- Like states of water: God, Man, Soul
-
Influence
Figures
Paul (Saul of Tarsus):
- Originally named Saul of Tarsus, and was a skeptic/prosecutor of Christianity
- Had a personal experience (Road to Damascus)
- Converted to Christianity
- New beliefs: everyone can convert, not just Jews, but also Gentiles even
- Should translate texts to common language for others to understand too
Peter:
- Had different ideals from Paul
- Believed that needed to convert to Judaism first, and be circumcised
- Was head of the Apostles, or technically even the first "Pope"
-
Constantine:
- First Emperor to convert to Christianity
-
Adam & Eve
- Original sin, parents of humanity
Recorded texts
Gospels:
- Recounting of stories through Jesus' life
- Through multiple perspectives, although
commonly accepted ones are written by Mark,
Matthew, Luke and John
Letters, New and Old Testaments
Church/practices
Birthday of the Church - Pentecost
- Christianity became religion of Rome, when the Emperor Constantine converted
- Before (above) was subversive because the power structure was originally the Cult of the Emperor, and this new idea seemed subversive of said power
- Creeds: a representation of faith, through action or words (more so an expression of faith)
- Examples include Baptismal creed, Apostles Creed, Nicene Creed
-
Symbols
Fish Symbol
- Good news
- Secretive way of communicating
this belief of Jesus Christ the Savior
Cross
- Was originally the cross used to cruxify Jesus, but now
used as one of the most prominent Christian Symbols
Heaven and Hell
- In general a common trope throughout the world
Historical Lore
Death: Jesus was captured by Romans, sentenced to death for heresy
- Ratted out by Judas, one of his followers
- Beaten, had a crown of thorns on his head as mockery with his title "King of Jews"
- Forced to carry cross up hill and was crucified (not tied though, was nailed to the cross)
- Left there for 3 days, and 3 days after buried, he disappeared from his tomb, supposedly ressurected…
Post Mortem: Jesus went to meet disciples
- Word of his resurrection spread, and
rest is history
Life
Born in Bethlehem, conceived through
holy spirit and birthed by Mary. Not much
known about early life...
-
Judaism:
- Abrahamic foundations, first conceptions of monotheism, this branches out to Islam, Christianity, Judaism...
- Jews captured by Romans, and in their
impoverished state find new ways to approach their religion
- Jesus' revolutionary idea broke down social barriers, bringing together the "clean' and "unclean"
- Main idea is that Jesus was Jewish, and Christianity didn't form in a vacuum - it started out of Judaism, and Christianity was something others created out of Jesus' story in a sense
Miracles/Actions
Resurrection:
Represents this everlasting-ness of
Jesus - a miracle act that differentiates
him from any other prophet or messiah...
- Solidifying of Jesus' life --> his story can now be shared anywhere and isn't situational to just his surroundings
Healing: The healing of those who
were deemed unhealable, the resurrections
of others from the dead, the spiritual healing
he gave others
