The expansion of the Church was given energy by the Church by Saul a Jewish man who persecuted Christians but became a baptized Christian and brought the gospel to Rome
Saul, as an apostle to the Gentiles is known by the Roman form of his name Paul.
Paul and Peter has a controversy that differentiated Christianity from Judaism gradually. Peter believed the Gentiles needed to be circumcised and a Jewish convert to become Christian. Whereas Paul believed that Gentiles could convert directly to Christianity without needing to be Jewish first.
Paul's letters to the new churches of the Hellenistic would became very important to the new testament.
"In its largest sense, the church is universal- the community of all people who profess faith in christ." The church is described as the body of christ. "Not all parts of the body of christ, the church, have the same function but all parts are connected and all suffer and rejoice together."
Through the preachings of Paul and missionaries, Christianity grew quickly and spread through the Mediterranean world.
The Emperor Constantine became a christian which was a big turning point because Rome persecuted christians and were martyred for their faith.

The Orthodox Christian population has doubled but is a smaller percentage in the overall Christian community.
-Promotes mystical life more actively.
-Focus on Jesus humanity while also believing he was some kind of God.
-Doesn't believe in the Purgatory or indulgences or immaculate conception.

Deacon- Is the last form of training to become a priest.
-Priest- have to undertake a Rite of Ordination to obtain priest hood.
-Bishop- have to undertake a Rite of Ordination to obtain priesthood.

Matthew, Mark, and Luke are Synoptic Gospels, they represent a "common view" of Jesus.

-Focus on his humanity,
-God intervenes on behalf of humanity,
-Christ's humanity as a standard for humanity
Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Spirit
Atonement:
-Reconciliation of humanities sin,
-Original Sin: Committed by Adam & Eve
