The studies tended to indicate that asynchronous, purposefully structured discussions, with clear guidelines and timely, summative, and individualized feedback from the instructor or peer students are the best instructional strategies to support learning in an online environment (Borokhovski et al., 2012; Darabi et al., 2013).
