        dickens's intention was to subtly indicate that what scrooge is doing is the wrong decision; we know that dickens believes that family is more impostant than any material item, and he is trying to convey this message to the reader.

  - - - therefore, scrooge's greed is what is causing him to be sad and lonely
        
        perhaps dickens' intention was to create a negative, undesirable atmosphere around the prospect of greed so that poeple could see it from a new perspective and perhaps reflect on how it is an unfavourable approach to how they should live
