Impacts of VRA returning
voter ID laws
If not reversed, they would be restructured to be less discriminatory
Many of these laws would likely be reversed
Many Voter-ID laws went into place after the Shelby V. Holder case
80% of people who can't vote due to voter-ID laws are people of color
Tend to happen more in red states.
the rep party only get a very small amount of the minority vote, therefore they make it harder for them to vote
In texas you can use a gun license to vote but not your school id
most gun owners in texas as white whereas most college students are black
Gerrymandering AKA Redistricting
Targets areas with higher percentages of minorities.
Silences the voices of people of color and creates lack of representation
A restructured VRA would likely try to dismantle Redistricting as a whole
Once again, this tends to happen more in red states
It has been addressed in the courtroom before, in states like North Carolina, but it is still very much prevalent
If the VRA returned in a restructured and constitutional way, it would be much more difficult for these states to get away with these suppression tactics.
Shelby County V. Holder
This case practically ruled the VRA as unconstitutional
After this case, states almost immediately started to flood in a wave of Voter-ID laws and suppression tactics
Despite these tactics, in recent elections, states such as Texas and Georgia (who are traditionally very red) have slowly begun to turn blue as the minority population increases in those states
Because of this, even more voter suppression tactics have appeared to silence the minority vote
