Identifying Students With
Special Educational Needs in the Classroom.
1. Observe possible signs
: Dissaccosiated with learning, behaviour issues, low standards/insufficient completion of work, regular absenteeism.

2. Have a meeting:
Discuss the learner with other teachers/members of staff to see if the student is struggling in other subjects.
Discuss areas of weakness - Is the student significantly behind his/her peers?
No - Consider the issues less likely to be of an educational/academic nature but more likely to be social/behavioural
Yes - Meet with administrators, a counciler and other teachers to work as a team to decide on methods of differentiation - Scaffolding, instructions, additional support, goal setting etc.Is this likely to be enough?
No - Is it possible that the student’s learning problems are the result of a visual, hearing, or
motor impairment, or of a disability
other than a specific learning disability? If yes...
Yes - Continue to monitor the learners achievements. Is the learner catching up with his/her peers?
If yes continue/discontinue the support as appropriate.
No -
3. Make a referral
- School personnel, parents, other person involved in the care of the child.

Meet with the parents
Discuss the childs academic performance. Parents should give consent to make the referral.
Speak with parents - are there any other social/cultural issues that the teacher needs to be aware of?
