THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
Antonio, a Venetian merchant, agrees to loan money to his friend Bassanio,so he can woo his beloved and wealthy Portia.
Antonio's money is tied up in his ships out at sea. So, he visits the moneylender Shylock to acquire the necessary funds.
Antonio had insulted Shylock in the past for being Jewish(EBREO), so Shylock wanted revenge. He loans (PRESTA) Antonio the money but,he makes a condition :
the loan must be repaid in three months or Shylock will exact a pound of flesh (LIBBRA DI CARNE) from Antonio taken from any part of his body Shylock chooses.
Antonio agrees, confident that his ships will return in time.
In the meanwhile (NEL FRATTEMPO), Antonio’s friend, Lorenzo elopes (FUGGE) with Shylock’s daughter, Jessica, who wants to become a Christian and marry him.
-
Even when Bassanio offers much more than the amount(IMPORTO) in repayment(RIMBORSO), Shylock is intent on seeking revenge on the Christians.
He wants it from Antonio's heart, which means Antonio will die.
-
Is comparing Jewish men with Christians and he's saying that if they have the same eyes, hands, senses, passions would not be equal to the Jews?
-
A phrase that struck(colpire) me very much was " If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that "
It refers to REVENGE. It is normal that Shylock wants revenge because he insulted him. He felt humiliated
He is so evil(malvagio) what Christians taught him (Antony insulted him), it is as if Shylock was the student. He is learning from Antonio. It will be difficult, but he will overcome(superare) his teaching.
