The theory of Plate Tectonics
What is the theory about the plate tectonics?
The theory of plate tectonics is that Earth's surface is made of rigid slabs of rock, or plates, that move with respect to each other.
What do plate tectonics cause?
Plate tectonics sometimes cause earthquakes and volcanic eruption because when they separate from the sea floor earthquakes happen.
What is the group of satellites?
Global Positioning System (GPS).
What are the three types of plate boundaries?
Divergent Plate boundaries, Transform Pate boundaries and Convergent Plate boundaries.
Transform Pate boundaries: The Transform Pate when two plates slide past each-other.
Convergent Plate boundaries: The Convergent Plate forms when two plates collide. The denser plate sinks below the more buoyant plate in a process called subduction.
Divergent Plate boundaries: The Divergent Plate forms when two plates separate.
What are plate tectonics?
Plate tectonics provide an explanation for the occurrence of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
What happens when plates separate close to the plate boundary?
When they separate along a the plate boundary stress builds. A rapid release of energy can result in earthquakes.
What are the forces causing plate motion?
Ridge Push: Rising mantle material at mid-ocean riges creates called ridge push.
Slab Pull: When tectonic plates collide, the denser plate will sink into the mantle along a subduction zone. As a slab sinks, it pulls on the rest of the plate with a force called slab pull.
Basal Drag: Is how convention currents in the asthenosphere circulate and drag the lithosphere similar to the was a conveyor belt moves items along at a supermarket checkout.
Why continents move?
Continents move because the asthenosphere moves underneath the lithosphere.
Why is Earth the only planet in the solar system that has plate tectonics?
Extrasolar planets outside our solar system are also being studied.
