The United States is commonly classified as a representative democracy, since that elected members of Congress and state legislatures make our laws. However, critics have questioned whether our democracy really is representative. Even today, the poor, many racial and ethnic groups, the working class, the LGBT community, and the people with disabilities have questioned whether their views are truly included in the political debate.
