Peterson & Peterson 1959 …
Peterson & Peterson 1959
Duration of STM
Methods:
24 participants (students)
Nonsense trigram followed by a 3 digit number
Participants told to countdown from until told to stop and recall the nonsense trigram
Retention intervals 3,6,9,12,15,18
Findings:
The longer each student had to count backwards, the less well they were able to recall the trigram accurately.
After 3 seconds 80% of the trigrams were recalled correctly.
After 6 seconds this fell to 50%.
After 18 seconds less than 10% of the trigrams were recalled correctly.
Conclusion:
STM has a duration of less than 18 seconds if verbal rehearsal is prevented
Criticisms:
Low ecological validity
Artificial task
Cannot apply to real life
Low population validity
Students are an intelligent age group
Aim may be guessed
