Causes of the French Revolution
Economic issues (a lot of debts)
High taxes
50% of the income paid taxes came form the third state, despite being the state with fewer economic resources they had the heaviest taxes. While the first and second state with their privileges and wealth paid little to no taxes.
Food prices rise
Due to the terrible weather conditions, many crops were destroyed and that meant that the food that was left was more expensive.
War expenses
They spend a lot of resources in the French Indian War, plus they had extra debts from the previous war they had with England.
Excessive spending from the monarchy
French Bankruptcy
Louis suffered a bankrupt which generated many problems not just in third state, also in second state
Enlightenment Ideas
Natural rights not given ( liberty, property and life)
American Independence success inspired French people to use Enlightenment ideas
French people began to reason Rousseau and Voltaire ideas
Weak monarchy
Instead of taking action to solve the crisis, the king Louis XVI decided to spend his time doing leisure activities.
Great Fear
Rumors spread among the peasants that the nobles had hired bandits and in response people decided to attack the noble's manors.
Also, another similar phenomena happened with the prison Bastille. There were rumors that foreign troops were coming to France to slaughter the french people, so they wanted to have the tools to protects themselves (since they also believed the king was not going to safe them).
Few representation power from the third state in the Estates-Generals
Each state had only one vote, which meant that even though the Third Estate had more representatives they were still outvoted.
Old Regime
French people were in discomfort for inequality between third state and second and third state
Also third class was in discomfort because just the 2% percent of the population had the luxuries and money that 2nd and 3rd class had and the rest 98% percent suffer poverty
