Later on, Chancellors developed a fourth court, known as the Court of Chancery. This court separated itself from the common law courts, developing a parallel legal system based on maxims designed to provide equity. The idea of equity was to use discretion in instances where the other courts were too rigid, in order to pursue fairness. The Court of Chancery could also hear disputes informally, quickly, and without a jury.
