My Leadership Story
Sports
Basketball
In grade 8 I played house league basketball with ramblers at the end of the year we had a tournament with all of the team and I led my team to victory winning every game by use specific plays against the teams that I we would work from playing against them before and by making sure the guarding match ups were even.
When I lived in Ottawa for grade 6 and 7 I played basketball with the Goulburn team. During games and tournaments I would help the team figure out what plays we needed to run against the other team in order to win. I would help my team when they didn't know their spot in the offence or defence formations. And before games I would always start the warm up for the team and lead them through stretches.
In grade 8 I was the only experienced basketball player on the team and the coaches didn't know that much about basketball so they had me runs some drills, warm up and teach the team the defence plays. During the first game I was made ball handler and was in charge of calling out plays for the team to run.
Volleyball
I used to play beach volleyball with my team on the weekends and sometimes the weekdays in September to late November and when we play beach I would take the lead and help out my partner when playing because I had more experience with playing beach than my partner. When we were having a rough streak in the game I brought the energy back up by talking and making her laugh so she was more relaxed and we had fun instead of worrying about the score.
The coaches at LVC taught me a lot about leadership. They taught me that in order to be a good leader you should build a bond and trust with your team, teach instead of giving orders. I also learned that in order to be a good leader for the team I have to make sure to show them that making mistakes is okay and there is nothing to worry about. And that its okay to not always get gold its okay to get silver that was a lesson I accidentally taught my friend during a tournament.
After the tournament we were on our way out we just got second place and I saw my friend Taryn and it was my first medal in volleyball. I was so excited I ran to Taryn and yelled happily that I got my first medal and she gave me a hug and was happy to even though she was on a another team. and Oliva was upset we got silver until she saw how happy I was getting the medal.
I learned a good lesson about leadership in grade 9 on the junior girls volleyball team because the coaches were excellent leaders and they taught me how a good coach should run their team, they should always take in account the development of the players and make sure they are also having fun at the same time. They gave feedback to the players in a positive way and it made me want to try harder and be a better player.
Soccer
When I used to play soccer the coach had me run part of practice whenever they had something to set up or if they had a phone call. I would be in charge of choosing the drills and warm up. I was also in charge of leading the drills, I was the first one to do the drill to show the team how to do them, if they didn't already know how to do them.
Camps
In the summer before grade 9 I volunteered at FCCC as a camp counsellor, I lead my team of campers around the church doing the activities on the schedule at the time they were scheduled. Making sure we didn't leave a kid behind, making sure to do attendance before we left, made sure the kids had fun and made sure they ate. Then at the end of the day we had the kids in our designated area with our sign and we didn't leave the area until every kid was picked up by their parent and/or guardian.
In the summer before grade 10 I volunteered at Oakridge Presbyterian Church. And I was in charge of planning games for the campers, along with my friend Chris. We had worked together to pick and plan the camp activities while keeping in mind what the campers wanted to do. I came up with a few of the games to play that weren't on the idea list we were given and when Chris and I were setting up for the games I told him what we needed for the game and where it needed to go.
Relay For Life
In grade 9 I was in charge of my team for relay for life. And early in the morning a few hours before we left we sat in the tent talking and connecting, when we just made our team I made a group chat for the team and that was where we planned on how to raise money/get donations. I asked everyone to give some ideas for fundraising ideas and then we put it to a vote, and when we decided I assigned each person to their role in the fundraiser and what they needed to bring and when they needed to be there.
And when it was time for the really event at school I made sure everyone had the donations they needed to get in and then I assigned things for people to bring for when we spend the night there at school. I also made sure everyone knew where we were set up. Made sure everyone made it to the team versus team activities.
WOW
In grade 8 I was in charge of making the ribbons for our woman of worth assembly. I recruited help from friends and other members and together we were able to make a couple hundred white ribbons for the assembly. I gave everyone a certain number of ribbons they had to complete so the work load was evenly distributed.
