Spyware

Ransomware
A type of malware that prevents users from accessing their system or personal files and demands ransom payment in order to regain access.

Root kit
A rootkit is a collection of computer software, typically malicious, designed to enable access to a computer or an area of its software that is not otherwise allowed and often masks its existence or the existence of other software.

Virus
A virus is a specific type of malware that self-replicates by inserting its code into other programs.

Trojan horse
Greeks appear to sail away, leaving behind a giant wooden horse as a token of surrender. Drunk on victory, the Trojans bring the horse inside their walls, only to discover Odysseus and his men were hidden inside the whole time.

Worm
worm copies of itself from computer to computer. It can replicate itself without any human interaction, and it does not need to attach itself to a software program or files in order to cause damage.

Bug
Bugs are a flaw that produces an undesired outcome.
These flaws are usually the result of human error and typically exist in the source code or compilers of a program.

Bots
ort for Robot, are small apps that perform automated tasks over the internet. These tasks are typically simple and repetitive. When you order something online you probably place the order with a bot. Contacting tech support about a problem with an app, a bot may answer your question.

While these types of malware differ greatly in how they spread and infect computers, they all can produce similar symptoms.

Spam
While spam is not actually a type of malware, it is very common for malware to spread through spamming. This happens when computers that are infected with viruses, worms, or other malware are used to distribute spam messages containing more malware. Users can prevent getting spammed by avoiding unfamiliar emails and keeping their email addresses as private as possible.

Adware
Unwanted software designed to throw advertisements up on your screen, most often within a web browser. Some security professionals view it as the forerunner of the modern-day PUP (potentially unwanted program). Typically, it uses an underhanded method to either disguise itself as legitimate, or piggyback on another program to trick you into installing it on your PC, tablet, or mobile device.

Malicious bots
Botnets cause distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDoS Attack). In 2016 there was a DDoS attack that affected PSN & some Xbox Live apps.
