4.3 Classification and Evolution
Taxonomic Levels
Phylum
Contains all groups that have same body plan.
Domain
Three Domains: Archaea, Eubacteria and Eukeryotae
Kingdom
Traditionally five main kingdoms: Plantae, Animalia, Fungi, Protoctista which all have nuclei and are eukaryotes. Single celled organisms are Prokaryotae.
Class
All possess the same general traits
Order
Using additional information about the organisms.
Family
Closely related genera
Genus
Closely related species
Species
Basic subunit of classification, all members show some variations but essentially the same
Features of classification
Prokaryotae
No Nucleus
loop of DNA not arranged in linear choromosomes
Naked DNA
no membrane bound organelles
smaller ribosomes than other groups
smaller cells
free-living or
Protoctista
eukaryotic
mostly single celled
mostly free living
Fungi
eukaryotic
single celled
chitin walls
mostly free living
Plantae
eukaryotic
multicellular
cellulose cell wall
Animalia
eukaryotic
multicellular
heterotrophic
able to move around
Phylogeny
the study of evolutionary relationships between species. Studying how closely different species are related
Human's and Gorillas share many features
We have a common ancestor
Can call humans and gorillas monophyletic
Same taxonomic group
Variation
Continuous Variation
There are two extremes and a full range of intermediate values.
Discontinuous Variation
Two or more distinct categories with no intermediate values
Combined Effects
