How tectonic plates move
The tectonic plates float on a malleable layer of the earth, the asthenosphere.
The plates move due to convection currents, the movement of heat throughout the layer.
Some scientist still have theories that they could be moving due to Earth's rotation and the gravitational pull, though the nature of the asthenosphere is a main reason for movement.
