SIOP concept

The Protected Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP, by its communities) model is a research-based instructional method that addresses the academic needs of English Learners (ELLs).

These include content goals, aligned with state and local content area standards, and language goals, aligned with state language proficiency benchmarks or language arts standards, or national TESOL standards.

Content objectives prevent learning experiences from being mere activities.

The integration of content and language objectives ensures that content learning is not the only focus in content classes. Learning a language and content details can happen in the same class.

Using teaching and learning strategies Teachers are encouraged to use their professional judgement to review the suggested strategies and decide on the most appropriate for meeting the needs of their students and deliver the essential content in a resilience and wellbeing, drug education or road safety context.
