Definition
The damage of the airsacs(alveoli)
Causes
Long-term exposure to irritants
Long-term cigarrete smoking
Pathophysiology
This creates larger air spaces
The surface area of the lungs gets reduced
The thinner walls of alveoli weaken and rupture
The alveoli get damaged
The amount of oxygen reaching the blood stream is reduced
Clinical manifestations
Productive cough
Shortness of breath
Frequent coughing and wheezing
Tightness in the chest
Nursing management
Encourage controlled coughing to clear secretions
Monitor vital signs
Administer oxygen therapy
Maintain proper ventilation
Place a patient in high fowler's position
