Structure of Personality
Id:
-pleasure principle
-unconscious drives and instincts
-entirely selfish & demands instant gratification of its needs

Ego:
-reality principle
-reduces conflict between id and superego
-develops around 2 years
-uses defence mechanisms
Superego:
-morality principle
-internalised sense of right and wrong
-develops around 5 years
-represents the moral standards of the child’s same-sex parent and punishes the ego for wrong-doing
Defence Mechanisms
Repression - an unconscious mechanism employed by the ego to keep disturbing or threatening thoughts from becoming conscious

Psychosexual Stages
Oral(0-2):
-infant achieves gratification through oral activities
-e.g. feeding, thumb sucking and babbling

Phallic(3-7):
-the child learns to realise the differences between males and females and becomes aware of sexuality
-
Genital(11-adult):
-the growing adolescent shakes off old dependencies and learns to deal maturely with the opposite sex
The Oedipus complex:
-Occurs in the phallic stage
-Boys develop incestuous feelings towards their mother
-& murderous hatred for their father/rival
-they repress their feelings and identify with their father
The Electra complex:
-Occurs in phallic stage
-Girls develop penis envy
-They desire their father and hate their mother
