Definition: an opacity of the lens that distorts image projected onto the retina and can progress to blindeness.
Pathophysiology

Water content decreases, calcium content increases, and soluble protein becomes insoluble

Compression of lens fibers causes a bilateral painless, progressive loss of transparency
