OUTCOMES OF DIVERSITY
SPACIAL
POSITIVE
- Culturally diverse areas are of interest to tourists, e.g. Chinese district in Donegall Pass
- Tourism, bringing new businesses generating money for the economy. Peacewalls and murals becoming part of guided tours themselves
NEGATIVE
- More segregation [22% wont shop on 'the other side']
58% would travel twice the distance to get groceries - can result in duplication of services
SOCIAL
POSITIVE
- Increased festivals and entertainment
St.George's market = generates money for economy
celebrating chinese new year attracts tourists
- Integrated schools such as Lagan College Belfast and Forge IPS, creates more of a tolerance and understanding of different cultures from a young age
NEGATIVE
- Discrimination - inc racial attacks
- Sectarianism - fear of the other side
- Violence and paramilitary violcence
2/3 of deaths happened within 500m of peace wall
ECONOMIC
POSITIVE
- celebration of cultural heritage e.g. Orange museum, motorway from Dublin to Belfast
- Integration funding from EU for schools and community groups
- Festivals like Mela earn money for local council
- New businesses and increased services e.g. Ormeau road has little to no Irish restaurants - increases employment and income to migrants
NEGATIVE
- Employment discrimination
- Lack of investment by companies due to fear of segregation and constant re-bombing
- Lack of tourism due to social deprivation.
- Cost of segregated society policing annual parades costs £1 billion per year.
