Suggests that there us an international division of labour consisting of 3 types of capitalist zone:
The core (developed) countries
Semi-periphery countries (these have some wealth but also poverty)
periphery countries (poor countries which provide minerals and cash crops to the core and semi-periphery
Countries can be upwardly or downwardly mobile in this hierarchy but it is difficult to move up
Criticisms
Ignores that interconnects which can lead to exploitation of developing contries
ignores negatives of globalisation
Criticises western models of development.
