Edwin sutherland explains criminal behaviour as being down to the socialisation with people
Friends, family, peers and those who can have an influence on our behaviour
-
we socialise with people who have attitudes towards criminal behaviour
these attitudes influence our own
favourable positive attitudes towards criminal behaviour
HOWEVER Sutherland proposed that different people have different amounts of influence
admire more, spend more time with, see frequently

socialisation refers to how we acquire and learn behaviour which is acceptable in society but may be different based upon gender
Example the role of family where girls are traditionally raised to be conformist where boys are raised to be tough and risk taking.
-
mother for girls and father for boys.
traditionally it seems that girls have more access to their mother where as father are more likely to be absent
results in male rejecting his mother’s socialisation and turning to peer groups
peer groups may encourage risk taking behaviour, boy gains peer approval and leads to criminal behaviour
Heidensohn proposed the role of culture - patriarchal societies men have more power than women in the home and wider society
females are kept under male supervision and so have little opportunity to commit crime
There can be severe consequences for violating the cultural norm by being a female criminal. due to socialisation it is socially acceptable for males to turn to crime
Due to the media over reporting particularly violent crimes particularly those with a sexual element, women are often seen as victims, not criminals
meaning women are more likely to spend time indoors “staying safe” than venturing out into the dark to commit crimes
One individual difference of criminal behaviour is explained by Eysenck's criminal personality questionnaire
extraverted, neurotic or psychotic, and how that will link to their criminal behaviour.
The questionnaire showed that individuals who showed high levels of extraversion seek arousal stimulation to the brain.
