why may it be difficult to fail a student?
MENTOR EMOTIONS
anxiety about what others who liked the student may think
remembering how hard placements were when you was a student and the feeling of guilt
lack of confidence in own abilities to fail the student
the conflict that could arrise if the student disagrees with the decision
the student mentor relationship being a complex dynamic one- shopuld you allow for that
stress factors- would it be easier to just pass them as youre too busy
being a mentor can be overwhelming on top of additional duties it is a large responsibility
SUPPORT
lack of support from other collegues
time restrictions within the work enviroment meaning the student hasnt had much support
other priorities e.g covid stressors
lack of open/honest communication
unsure on the actual process of failing a student if you have never done it before
lack of evidence to even fail the student or rational
lack of support from the univerity
bums on seat approach- as long as they are passing academic work why would tehy be a problem.
CONSEQUENCES
complaints against yourself or toward the ward
you may be crushing someones dream of becoming a nurse
did i do everything i could to stop this student failing
will this cause stress and anxiety for them having to make up hours, dont know the other stressers in their life.
MENTOR COMPETENCE
fear of being a labeled as that "awful mentor"
new mentor- a lot of pressure
poor documentation
failure to give student time to improve on failings
lack of goal setting in initial and interim interviews could have lead to failure
lack of understanding of paperwork student has as they can come from many different universities
the procress was different when you had a mentor
time restraints- failture to acctually spend the time with the student required.
