CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
Definition
A numbness and tingling in the hand and arm caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist.
also known as median nerve compression
clinical manifestations
hand weakness
hand clumsiness
sensation of pins and needles
pain in the hand and arm with numbness or tingling
Causes
hypertension
fluid retention from pregnancy or menopause
thyroid dysfunction
autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis
diabetes
Nursing care plan
nursing interventions
advise patient to practice activity modification to relive repetitive strain
give non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as prescribed to relieve pain
advise patient to avoid flexion and twisting motion of the wrist.
wrist splint in light extension to relieve pressure aggravated by wrist flexion
evaluation
patient is free from injury
patient is having enough sleep
pain is relieved

physical examination
Pathophysiology
because of hypertrophy or edema of the flexor synovium.
Pain is thought to be secondary to nerve ischemia rather than direct physical damage of the nerve.
carpal tunnel syndrome is caused predominantly by compression of the median at the wrist
Risk factors
being pregnant
abnormally small bones that form the carpal tunnel
being menopausal
obesity
diabetes
being pregnant
rheumatoid arthritis
mastectomy
hyperthyroidism
