Discourse must be meaningfully appropriated to "have an effect", influence, entertain, instruct or persuade, with very complex perceptual, cognitive, emotional, ideological, or behavioural consequences. In a "determinate" moment the structure employs a code and yields a message: at another determinate moment the "message", via its decodings issues into the structure of social practices (Hall 165). The media has significant power in the circulation of discourse. Having diverse media platforms and sources is important for ensuring that there is opportunity for critiquing and resisting discourses that are bias or lacking proper representation.
