Loss
Losing something or someone precious in a sudden manner can cause victims to alter their behaviour as they find a ways to minimize the emotional pain.
The theme of loss in the Russo brothers’ The Avengers: Endgame is explored through the interrelationships between the main characters following ‘the snap,’ as it highlights the various ways people cope with losing a loved one.
In a short span of time, Thor lost his family, home, and confidence after suffering a devastating defeat by a foe due to a simple mistake in battle, causing the deaths of many of his friends and family. His sarcastic quip “What more could I lose?” in Avengers: Infinity War served as an unfortunate foreshadowing of how this theme would be further explored through his circumstances.
Thor’s spiral into depression and self neglect is a prime example of how characters are impacted by a series of losses.
Friendship/Solidarity
Although for a time his losses sent him spiraling into a depression and self-neglect, Thor was only able to overcome the emotional trauma through his interactions with his friends Bruce Banner and Rocket Racoon who experienced similar losses.
