HEP Humanities -
Storytelling &
High Leverage Teaching
Techniques
Recap & recall
previous knowledge
Used 'cloze' sentences
to pull out vocabulary
& core knowledge
Vocabulary was pre-taught
& children's knowledge
up to this point was strong
Children's
role
No calling out answers
No hands up
Always asked
specific children
Expected to answer
in full sentences
(this is where the Oracy come in)
NO INTERRUPTIONS!
Story Telling
(prior to any 'reading'
of the story)
Used the PowerPoint
as a structure to
remember key points of the
story (prompt cards?)
Covers the whole story,
but is more about
telling them
about the story
, rather than
'telling the story'. Plot, characters,
places & vocabulary
Build up, pace, suspense,
awe, wonder
Use voice, expression and eyes
to engage children
Used 'I say, you say' to really ermphasise
some of the vocabulary (also repeated
whole sentences)
Used 'Why ask 1 when I
can ask 5?' selectively
NB: HAD CORE KNOWLEDGE &
VOCABULARY TO THE FORE AT ALL TIMES -
MUCH EMPHASIS AND REPETITION
Reading the Story
The smallest part off the lesson
Teacher read the story, children
followed in booklet
(
using children to read discouraged
as some of the emphasis would be
lost
)
It was 'familiar':
After everything that preceded it,
the story, read from the booklet,
was totally familiar
'The Task' was easy for the
children because the children
were steeped in the knowledge
