Dolphins & Marine Biome (Pacific Ocean)
What food do dolphins eat?
Dolphins normally eat fish, squids, shrimp, and jellyfish. A dolphin's natural predator are bull sharks, dusky sharks, tiger sharks and great white sharks.
Their diet is based on what they have in their habitat, and also what the season is.
While coastal dolphins tend to eat fishes and squid, offshore dolphins will eat fish and squid.
Body
Teeth: Dolphins have teeth, but when they eat their food, they just grab, bite, and swallow
Dorsal fin: The fin on the upper side of the body, it helps the dolphin maintain stability.
Pectoral fin: It is used for steering and movement, helping the dolphin to move in the water and avoid obstacles
Veins: The veins in the fins and the fluke (tail) helps the dolphin maintain and conserve body heat in cold water.
Skin: Dolphins have smooth, rubbery skin and are usually colored in some mixture of black, white, and gray, it helps them be 9 times faster than humans.
Blubber: Like other whales, they have an insulating layer of blubber(fat) beneath the skin, so they can survive in the cold water.
Blowhole: The blowhole of a dolphin is like their nose, it helps them suck in air and breath once they surfe above the water.
How do dolphins swim?
Dolphins generate a lift force that is directed forward, on both the upstroke and downstroke, this produces the thrust that pushes the dolphin through the water.
The body shape of a dolphin also helps them swim through the water at a very high speed, it is shaped like a tube that is pointed at both ends, the streamlining helps the water flow over the dolphin’s body as it swims.
They jump up in a circular motion to breath and dive back into the water, they can also perform a lot of water tricks with their flexible bodies.
Climate
The Pacific Ocean is mostly tropical or subtropical in climate, it is enormous absorbent of solar radiation, it is the warmest ocean so far.
There is a big contrast with the surface of the sea and the deep zone, the average temperature of the deep zone is 38.3°F, which is around 3.5°C.
It’s temperature depends on how deep you are in water, the more deep, the more cold it gets.
Life
Penguin, dugong, killer whale, humpback whale, fur seal, elephant seal, manta ray, sea otter, sea turtle, sea slug, octopus, giant squid, Pacific white sided dolphin, Stellar sea lion, hammerhead shark, and so much more
Life in the Pacific Ocean is very interesting, there is a huge food chain in the ecosystem, all the different species somehow connect with each other.
For example, the energy comes from the sun, and the primary producers of the sea are phytoplankton, zooplankton, and ocean plants. The primary consumers are fish, the secondary consumers will be the animals that eat the fish, such as small sharks, seal, sea lions, or even very big fish. The apex predator of the sea is the Killer Whale, also known as the Orca, it is the predator and enemy of almost any sea creature.
Location
The pacific ocean is a stretch of salt water extending from the Antarctic region to the Arctic in the north and lying in between the continents of Asia and Australia on the west and North and South America on the east.
Most of the Pacific Ocean is located in low latitudes between 35°N and 35°S.
