Severe greasy, frothy, fatty diarrhea, pain, flatus, N/V, stools have rotten egg smell.
Pathogen
Giardia intestinalis, a flagellated diplomonad
Dx
microscopic observation giardia in stool
Tx
Tinidazole, oral dehydration therapy, good hygiene, and filtering water
Cryptosporidiosis
S/S
Severe, watery diarrhea, HA, muscle pain, cramping, nausea, fatigue, and severe, fluid and wt loss with diarrhea
Pathogen
Cryptosporidium parvum intracellular
Dx
presence of oocysts in feces
Tx
fluid and electrolyte replacement
Prevention
proper hygiene
amebiasis
S/S
depends on health and virulence factor
Luminal amebiasis
invasive amebic dystnery
invasive extraintestinal amebiasis
Pathogen
entomoeba histolytica all 3 forms
Dx
microscopic observation
Tx
oral rehydration therapy and antiamebic drugs
Prevention
Proper hand hygiene and safe sex practices
