What can be a threat to play?
Currently - Covid 19
Currently in 2020, Covid 19 has altered lives and for young children this can be a huge worry for children being told they can socialise again after such a long period of time.
Health and Safety
If a child is not exposed to risks then why would they want to involve themselves in play that carries risks? Going back to a previous statement children only feel comfortable with activities they are used to. It is the fear of the unknown
A worry of doing wrong
The fear of doing something wrong is huge for adults, let alone for children. If a child has an idea but they have a fear of acting it out or portraying it wrong this can have a detrimental threat on a child's play experience. Children need to be encouraged that however they learn or play is positive and no-matter what they do they will be learning something, this could be about themselves, taking risks or learning something about themselves they didn't know.
Parents
The 'Bubble Wrap' child can impact a child's play as they feel worried or anxious about risk taking. This can have a shut down impact upon a child's play.
Lack of confidence
A child will only interact and involve themselves in what they are familiar with. If a child comes from an enviroment where they sit down and play they won't know necessarily how to approach play in different forms.
Pressure from parents
Especially with the new EYFS reforms currently coming in to play it is becoming more apparant that play is less essential to a child's learning and development so play can be restricted as parents may have concerns or worries of play based learning.
Over protected parents
Without always realising parents wrap their child in cotton wool and protect them from any danger or attend to their every need if they have a bump. If a child who is not exposed to risks goes in to a classroom enviroment where children enjoy a more active and physical role within their play a child may become reserved as they don't know how to act or approach this.
Adult-Led learning
Adult led learning can provide children with numerous opportunities and skills they may need, however, children also need a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities for children's play-based learning to thrive. If a child just learnt through adult-led activities they would not be presented with hands on experiences or opportunities to explore the world around them therefore impacting and restricting their play.
Having a good outdoor area to explore
Outdoor is a rich learning enviroment and promotes rich and enjoyable play experiences. Without the opportunity to be outdoor can have a threat to children's play as it restricts their imagination, likewise being in a different enviroment can spark more interest for children to come up with new play based ideas.
Adult Involvement
Adult-led activities can put a restriction upon further learning as a child does not have the hands on experiences or the opportunity to create learning goals for themselves.
Other children
Other children can threaten a play experience in a numerous amount of ways, this could simply be by taking the play in a different direction or by causing minor accidents due to not knowing the rules of play.
Toys
Commercial toys can impact a child's imagination and their opportunity to have freedom within their imagination.
Technology
Technology is a big thing in this current generation and a lot of children have their own piece of technology before the age of five. Although technology has its positives it is also a device that consumes a person and can restrict their imagination and their though processes around play-based experiences.
