The role of MSPs
their main role is to represent their constituents in parliament
They debate and vote on new laws
raise issues and scrutinize the Scottish government
Each of the 129 MSPs has the right to introduce two bills during one parliamentary session
the committee system
committees allow MSPs to further examine the work of the government and to hold them to account and conduct enquirers into relevant issues
There are a number of different committees which scrutinize the work of the government
some committees are mandatory such as the public petition committee,
Most committees have 5 to 15 cross party members
does allow the opposition parties to have a strong influence in Committees as they may be the Convenor or be in a majority if the Government is a minority one.
