What do totipotent, pluripotent, and multipotent mean?
totipotent stem cells
-
-
Definition: cells which are able to develop into any cell type found in the body (including the cells that create the embryonic membranes and placenta)
-
pluripotent stem cells
-
Formation: during the development, the outer cells form tissues, and the inner cells form the embryo; the inner cells are pluripotent cells
-
Examples: embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells
multipotent stem cells
Definition: cells that are able to develop into a limited number of cell types; adult stem cells are also called multipotent

What are stem cells?
MAIN TYPES
-
EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS
-
ROLE: during the first stages of development, a hollow ball (blastocyst) forms; the stem cells in the outer layer form the tissue and the ones in the inner cell mass form the embryo itself
DEFINITION: also called totipotent; able to develop into any type of cell in the body; serve as a repair system for the body; lay the foundation for differentiation

What is defferentiation?
When cells have certain genes which make them specialized, and they have a certain function in the body.
Cells become specialized, and they express the genes that make the proteins which are typical for the cell.
