How will I develop literacy skills and develop engagement in K-6 learners from diverse and cultural backgrounds in urban settings?
Literacy Skills
Use informal assessments to measure student's academic level/understanding of skill and to influence lesson focus and individual intervention/support
Reading & Writing
-
-
Closed Reading, Guided Reading, Reading Workshop, small book groups (grouped by reading level)
-
-
Further Engagement
Shape on Student's interests, strengths, and challenges
-
Focus on promoting intrinsic motivation, instead of relying heavily on extrinsic motivation ("carrots and sticks")
-
Diverse Backgrounds
-
Create constructive conversations about important topics/issues in society (e.g. homelessness, social injustice, climate change, etc.)
Example Texts (Skillful Learners): The Giver, The Hate U Give, All American Boys, Love Simon
Include and use texts that include diverse demographics and cultures beyond the typical characters (e.g. White children in a middle to high SES background in suburban neighborhoods).
