The government in japan before the Meiji period was the Tokugawa shogunate. then the oligarchy sparked a brief civil war which ended in the current shogun giving up power and the young emperor Meiji being declared the leader of japan
Idea's and knowledge
the Japanese used the iwakura mission to find ideas and political knowledge in order to modernize quickly and become a more powerful country
