Chapter 4 of the companion book for The Outsiders: Friendship VS. Loyalty
Friendship
Meaning and examples
Definition: a state of mutual trust and support between people.
Friendship is all about trust. Loyalty doesn't necessarily have to include trust, though it sometimes does.
Not only trust, friendship also includes care, and mutual enjoyment of being friends with one another.
Example: Ponyboy and Johnny have a friendship, a friendship that grows after having to stay together in the church.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
There are a lot of pros to having true friends:
Having someone you trust that also trusts you is always good, they are a good outlet for you to speak how you are feeling, which is a good way to start feeling better.
True friends also provide a support of enjoyment and fun, which boosts mental health,
Friends can make you try harder to be a better person, if you don't have any friends, you don't have anyone trying to convince you to be a better you, even if they don't say it, you still feel it because you want to either impress them, or just make them more comfortable with yourself.
Cons:
Fake friendship. I know this is practically what I said to the loyalty section, but I couldn't think of any others. Sometimes there is fake friendship, which is not good mentally for either person.
Loyalty
Meaning and examples
Definition: a strong feeling of support or allegiance.
This means that they feel that they are with them, and they are ready to defend or side with them in an argument or anything that they might need help with.
I feel like loyalty is more about being connected to the person you are loyal to, or respecting them. It doesn't necessarily mean friendship.
Example: Steve and Ponyboy's relationship.
Even though they aren't friends, they are still ready to protect each other because they are in the same gang.
Pros and Cons
Cons:
Loyalty without friendship isn't always true loyalty. Sometimes the person could be pretending to be loyal to look better, but when actually faced with a situation where the person needs their help, they could not help and ruin their "loyalty. This is not the only example of fake loyalty, there are others, and fake loyalty is bad because it 1. sends the wrong message to everyone that is involved with the people, and 2. It sends a fake sign to the person that is supposedly having a "loyal" person around them.
Pros:
Loyalty is good because it is helpful for both people, because loyalty that isn't friendship is sometimes mutual, and when it is, that's good because both people can benefit from it, even if they aren't friends.
Love
Love is a mix between loyalty, friendship, and then there is something else. There are many kinds of love.
An example of love is how the Curtis brothers feel about each other. (Even if Ponyboy doesn't show how much he loves Darry, it's obvious that they love each other on the inside.)
Takeaway: loyalty and friendship are different, but that doesn't mean they can't go together, and where there is friendship, there is usually loyalty. But there isn't always friendship where there is loyalty.
