Ethics, legal, cultural and environmental issues
Ethics are moral principles, or rules, which govern a person's attitudes and behaviour
Ethical issues include:
Ensuring public safety
-
As new technology is introduced, they bring safety concerns
Cultural issues
Examples:
- the digital divide
- the changing nature of employment
-
The digital divide is the divide between people who Cana be are uncomfortable using technology and those who cannot use it.
For example, young people may embrace new technology, whereas older people may be more reluctant to try it or even scared!
the changing nature of employment is the use of new technology in a workplace. Automation means that there has been a fall in manual labour. An example of this is warehouse packing.
On the other hand, this means there are more high-skilled jobs, like the maintenance of the automated systems
Memory
Read only memory (ROM)
Used to store the instructions and data of the computer, this is because it can be written to but not read

Secondary storage
Secondary storage is needed to keep programs and data forever, also known as non-volatile
-
-
Calculating the number of documents that can be stored on a storage medium can be a straightforward process.
For example, there are 150 music files, each of which is approximately 6 megabytes in size, and a 1 gigabyte USB memory stick on which these files are to be stored. In order to work out how much storage space is required to store all these files on the USB memory stick, the following calculation can be used:
150 x 6 megabytes = 900 megabytes

Environmental issues
Environmental issues are those where the manufacturing and use of computers has had a negative impact on the environment.
Examples
-
-
many people replace older technology before it fails simply because they perceive it to be old-fashioned or out of date
-
Legal issues
Computers might be used unlawfully in many ways, for example:
-
helping to steal financial information, such as credit card numbers or bank account details
helping to illegally copy and distribute films, television programmes and music
-
To help protect people, their data and their work, several laws have been introduced in the UK:
-
-
The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988
