New charter oath was made that outlined how the government should perform. It took many drafts to get all the Daimyo on board with this new way of ruling.

Contact with others
Russia- Russia was running out of resources in there Asian outpost and was looking for a way to provide there troops with the sustenance they needed. They began to trade with the Ainu (Indigenous group of Japan). Japan became concerned that Russia would invade the islands but Russia soon became involved with wars in Europe and backed out of japan
China- Japan saw China as a super power that could never fall. When china was conquered by Brittan this was a wake up call for Japan to open up so they would not be conqured like China
USA- The United States wanted to have some trade relationship with Japan but the main thing they wanted was a coal station so they could get fuel for there ships journeys back to the homeland. Japan was also on the trade route to China witch was only a benefit to the US.
Europe- Wars consumed Europe during the Meji period but trade did continue with japan. The Dutch were the only country allowed to set foot in Japan but since it was busy with war they would send ships from other country's to trade with Japan for them.
Since all European languages were written horizontal the Japanese believed all Europeans had the same language and that there was 1 huge super power in Europe.

Economic Systems
During the Edo peiroid under the shoguns rule, Japan had a stable non changing economy. This was changed during the Meiji period
Bad weather had destroyed crops and made the people of Japan starve, because of there hunger the questioned the tax's they were forced to pay.

Iwakura Mission

When the mission was finished Japan had gotten ideas on how the rest of the world was operating and integrated those ideas into there own country.
during the Iwakura Mission ambassadors from Japan were sent out to other country's to help gather knowledge information on how a country should run.

Vocabulary

Meiji- The word Meiji translates to enlightened one. This period was named after Emperor Meiji who was ruling during this time.
Reformation- During the Meiji period Japan had a reformation to help modernize. This reformation was the cause of the Iwakura Mission
Centralized Government-To have one person or group in charge of a country. Japan was a centralized government because it had an emperor.
Sovereignty- To have national independence. In the Meiji period Japan wanted to still have sovereignty and not be colonized.
Sonno joi-This is a phrase that means "Revere the Emperor, expel the barbarians.' it was commonly used as a way to show elegance to the Emperor.
Ainu- The indigenousness group of Japans north island. During the Meiji period the Ainu were assimilated into Japanese society.

Commodore Parry- This man from the USA showed up on the Japanese coastline with warships to help intima date japan into signing a trade treaty
Treaties- An agreement of peace or other matters. Japan had many treaties around trade most of them unfair and benefiting the other side.
Constitution/charter oath- The charter oath was a bunch of law that made sure that the government was equal and fair with its rulings.
Modernization-Japan had a great period of modernization to try and technologically catch up to the rest of the world.
Iwakura Mission- In this mission, ambassadors from Japan were sent out to other country's to Find out how they were running there government, school systems and many other basic systems
Imperial rule/Involatile-To have an iron clad rule. Japan thought this would be the best way to run a country because they saw foreign countries do it.
