MIGRATION & ACCUMULATION OF OIL & GAS
MIGRATION OF OIL & GAS
3 migration
stages:
1. Primary
Oil & gas is expelled from source rock (fine-grained) to reservoir rock (coarse-grained).
Short distance
Pressure-driven
2. Secondary
Oil & gas passes in the reservoir rock and becomes concentrated in trap rock.
Buoyancy-driven
Meters to kilometers
3. Tertiary
Oil & gas migrates through leaking trap to the surface.
Meters to kilometers
Buoyancy-driven
Petroleum already accumulate then its been migrates again.
Include seepage, leakage, dissipation, & petroleum alteration of petroleum.
Rate of petroleum supply higher than secondary migration
Result of natural breakdown
ACCUMULATION OF OIL & GAS
Oil & gas accumulates in oil & gas pools that have seal.

Emplacement
in reservoir
Depends on density of hydrocarbon component
Lowest - water is heavy
Middle - oil is light
Top - gas lighter
Happen due to leakage, seepage
Petroleum alteration
Changes in petroleum composition due to:
:star: Biodegradation
:star: Thermal alteration
